Scholarships for study at the LSE

LSE External Study Scholarships

The LSE awards three scholarships to External students who have been offered a place to study at the LSE:

Undergraduate award: One scholarship is awarded annually to a student at undergraduate level. This is for two years and covers full fees and maintenance. It is awarded to a student who has performed exceptionally well in the Foundation units of the degrees in Economics, Management, Finance and the Social Sciences.

Postgraduate awards: Two scholarships are awarded annually to students who have successfully completed one of the degrees in Economics, Management, Finance and the Social Sciences as External students, and who have also been accepted for postgraduate study at the LSE. To qualify students will normally have, or expect to have, a first-class honours degree. The scholarship covers full fees and maintenance.

Standard Chartered Bank Scholarships for undergraduate study

Standard Chartered Bank offers three scholarships at the LSE. These are awarded annually to students who are both nationals of, and resident in, Malaysia. Applicants must have successfully completed either their first year of a degree in Economics, Management, Finance and the Social Sciences and have been accepted for direct entry into the second year of a BSc degree at the LSE. Scholarships cover full fees and maintenance for two years to allow each student to complete their undergraduate degree at the LSE. The top three candidates, who have taken May/June examinations of that year, will be chosen.

The Charles Wallace Trust

The Charles Wallace Trust in conjunction with LSE External Study offers an annual award of £3,000 for postgraduate study at the LSE. Application is open to those who are both nationals of, and residents in, Pakistan. In addition, applicants should have completed a degree in Economics, Management, Finance and the Social Sciences as an External student, and have been offered a place to study on a Masters programme at the LSE.

How to apply

To be considered for a scholarship, you must have already been offered a place provisionally at the LSE. However, prior to acceptance, you should also do the following:

Undergraduate entry: Forms will be available from the British Council for you to apply for entry to the LSE, through UCAS in the normal way. If you are only applying to the LSE, please state on this form that you are applying for this scholarship. When you apply for entry through UCAS they should also inform the Director, LSE External Study. You should include your UCAS number, the degree you are applying for, and institution you are presently attending, if any.

Postgraduate entry: You should apply for entry direct to the Graduate Admissions Office at the LSE. You should also notify the Director, LSE External Study at the same time.

If you are offered a place at the LSE, you will automatically be sent an application form to apply for a scholarship. You should clearly indicate on this form that you are an External student (by ticking the relevant box) before returning the form.

Others Scholarships

Financial assistance is sometimes available through various scholarships or grant schemes. Candidates must however contact, research and apply directly to the Scholarship authorities.

The University of London is not able to influence any of the scholarship awarding authorities and is not responsible for processing or forwarding applications to them for funding.

As there are usually only a small number of scholarships available, competition is generally very high. You are therefore encouraged to investigate funding possibilities as early as possible. It is recommended that you submit your application to join the course as early as possible as in some instances a firm offer of a place from the University can be advantageous when asking an organisation for assistance with funding.

If you are outside the United Kingdom and there is a British Council Office near to you, it might also be worthwhile checking if they know of any local funding or sponsorships which are available.

This page will be updated from time to time with any additional information about scholarships and other funding that may become known.

This provides an opportunity for graduates of any discipline to gain an additional undergraduate degree by following a shorter than normal programme, successfully completing nine full units rather than twelve. This can normally be achieved in a minimum of two years with the exception of the BSc Economics, BSc Economics & Finance, BSc Development & Economics and the BSc Information Systems & Management.
