Human Resource Management

An overview of the key aspects of Human Resource Management [HRM], with an analysis of recent practices and debates in this field from an international and comparative perspective.

The syllabus will critically examine the role of HRM in organisations. It will focus on the concept of change by examining the environment in which HR Managers work. It will assess why HRM has become more central to organisations and where it has been marginalised. The key tasks of HRM will be studied in relation to: job analysis and design; recruitment and selection; employment appraisal; pay, benefits and performance incentives; training, management development and promotion; industrial collective bargaining, and health and safety. Students will also be expected to develop a critical assessment of the effectiveness of these practices.

The issues of equal opportunities (regardless of gender, race, religion, disability or sexual orientation) and discrimination are also examined in the light of legal regulation and current organisational practices.
