Nationalism and international relations
Prerequisite
– 11 Introduction to international relations
This paper surveys
four sets of issues in the study of nationalism:
-
rival definitions
of the nation (ie what is) and why it has come to exercise a central
position in modern political thought
-
the relationship
between nationalism and other major ideologies, eg liberalism, communism
and fascism
-
the impact of
nationalist theory and practice on international politics since 1945
-
the resurgence
of ethnic and nationalist conflict since the end of the Cold War and
the implications for international order, and the role of the UN.
