Focusing on the non-European world the syllabus covers US isolationism in the inter-war years; the rise of Japanese militarism and the Second World War; the origins and development of the Cold War; the Sino-Soviet split and the re-emergence of Japan; the development of détente; the origins of the ‘Second’ Cold War and the end of the Soviet Empire. Special attention is given to regional conflicts and the impact of Cold War and revolutionary change in Latin America, East and South East Asia, Africa and the Middle East.
