Sociology of development [55]

Prerequisite (if taken as part of a BSc degree):
21 Principles of sociology or 10 Introduction to sociology.

Neo-evolutionary and modernisation theories. Neo-Marxist theories of under-development. Colonialism and imperialism in relation to problems of development/under-development. Analysis of under-development in terms of modes of production. Global approaches to development.

In the light of the above approaches the following problem areas will be examined: industrialisation and development strategies, class structure and development, urbanisation, agrarian structures and peasant movements, authoritarianism, democratisation and the structure of the state. Socialist Third World and critiques of capitalist development. The major focus will be on the relationships between economic and socio-political change. Material for the paper will be mainly drawn from case studies on East Asia, Latin America and Africa.
